WAAPA and Spare Parts collaborate for ‘Life on Earth’

30 October, 2019

“Puppets are a wonderful vessel for emotion,” says Spare Parts Puppet Theatre’s Associate Director, Michael Barlow. “Without an internal life of their own, they allow our individual experiences to become universal as they unfold on stage.”

Barlow is working with WAAPA’s 3rd Year Performance Making students to devise an original theatre piece that features contemporary puppetry and the students’ creative inventiveness for their final show before they graduate.

“Life on Earth peeks into the hidden corners of our lives, the accidental, joyful, tragic and comic,” says Barlow. “Drawing from Bunraku puppetry and object theatre, this visual performance invites audiences to join in a communal daydream of our ephemeral lives.”

“The performers have been working hard over the last month to master the physical and conceptual demands of puppet theatre, and to create a large array of puppets for the production.”

This is the fifth year that WAAPA’s graduating Bachelor of Performing Arts (BPA) students have been offered the opportunity to study puppetry through an ongoing partnership with Spare Parts Puppet Theatre.

Barlow describes the current crop of performing artists emerging from the BPA course as an exciting new force in Australian theatre.

“As their three years at WAAPA nears its close, these young artists are brimming with ideas and energy,” he says. “Puppetry requires a lot from artists, physically and imaginatively, and it’s exciting to work with the BPA students as they add puppetry and visual theatre to their wide set of skills.”

The annual collaboration between WAAPA and Spare Parts Puppet Theatre always produces a highly entertaining and stunningly visual theatre experience for audiences.
