Spare Parts Puppet Theatre present The Little Prince, adapted by Simon Clarke from the book by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.
Director Michael Barlow has brought together an extraordinary team to create this enchanting production that follows the Little Prince on his exploration of the universe. The delightful visual and aural experience is aided by an ingenious set design by Jiri Zmitko. A large crate opens out into several boxes that mark the various destinations for the Little Prince and homes of the other characters he meets on several planets. The rod puppets and marionettes, also by Zmitko (with Kipling Smith), are exquisite. Lighting design by Karen Cook beautifully captures the vastness of the universe and the intimacy of the meetings. Composer Lee Buddle’s superb musical score, performed by world-renowned pianist Ross Bolleter, enhances the magical experience of the production.
Performers Kylie Bywaters (The Night Zoo) and Shane Adamczak (Miss Lily’s Fabulous Feather Boa) skilfully bring the puppets to life, capturing the individuality of the characters and navigating the transitions with aplomb.
Younger children will enjoy the Little Prince’s physical exploration, while older children and adults will pick up on the deeper messages and questions that are explored in the story; making The Little Prince a production the whole family can share.
