In partnership with Spare Parts, this 5-day training workshop raised fundamental questions about collaboration — how to propose and not impose; to lead, yield and follow effectively, and how to enhance the quality of shared listening. Exploring with 16 local actors, dancers, devisers and directors, Jeremy James, a long-standing member of Ariane Mnouchkine’s internationally acclaimed ensemble, Théâtre du Soleil, revealed how the “classical” chorus provides a compelling training tool. Similar to a mask or puppet, the chorus demands an elevated state of play for the ensemble of artists, and highlights the intrinsic relationship between their collective body, voice and imagination. Jeremy has worked and trained performers in more than 20 countries over the past 25 years, helping performers understand what it means to be fully present and connected — to the group, the poetic space, the text, the sound, and ultimately to the audience.
