“Very funny, very charming, this was obviously and audibly adored by the youngsters in the audience, but has plenty for grown-ups to love.”

Spare Parts Puppet Theatre will open 2021 with the World Premiere of Beanstalk, a retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk, from the Giant’s perspective. Having played a short schools’ season, and a single, media and friends’ performance – it will open properly to restricted audiences in January.

Written and performed by Sam Longley, a taller than average actor, the show is a direct to the audience address from Brian, a very personable and likeable giant, whose job is making clouds, and whose life has been thrown into turmoil by an unwanted visitor, a ‘groundling’ named Jack.

Most of the puppetry (aside from a very beautiful goose), is what might be termed the ‘puppetry of found objects’ as the food items and utensils of Brian’s kitchen become puppets – including a loaf of bread “Jack”. Longley is a consummate story-teller who has the audience completely under his spell. He has superb comic timing and his extensive improvisation experience is obvious when things go slightly awry.

The puppets, made by Jackson Harrison (who also stage manages – in a show with a big clean-up) are a delight – and there are lots of lovely moments – especially the creation of “clouds”. Lee Buddle’s composition is beautiful and the lighting, designed by Kristie Smith, adds extra magic.

Very funny, very charming, this was obviously and audibly adored by the youngsters in the audience, but has plenty for grown-ups to love. With 60% capacity still in force in WA, tickets, especially for such a joy of a show, will go quickly, so book as soon as you can.
