Masterclass – Puppet Construction with Jirka Zmitko

Spare Parts Puppet Theatre is teaming up with master puppet maker, Jiri Zmitko, as he reveals the secrets behind the fine art of marionette construction in this hands on 10 week puppet carving and construction course. The lucky 8 participants will be guided through the process of designing, carving and manipulating their very own wooden marionette. Places are very limited so book in early.

When: Tuesday nights from the 26th April
Where: Spare Parts Puppet Theatre – 1 Short Street, Fremantle
Cost: $450 per person.

About the artist!

Jirka Zmitko is a Czech born puppet maker and has been creating puppets since the late 80’s, and he spent five years at the world acclaimed Theatre DRAK in the Czech republic as a puppet maker before moving to Australia in 1997. From there he became the master puppet maker at Spare Parts, creating almost every puppet used in the company’s productions between 1997 and 2009. He also designed a number of productions including the award winning adaptation of Shaun Tan’s The Arrival and The Little Prince. Jirka has worked with Black Swan Theatre, KAOS Theatre Australia, Barking Gecko, Buzz Dance Theatre, the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, and Scitech, amongst others. His puppets have been variously described as exquisite, magical, cheeky, and ingenious.
