What is your role in Miss Lily’s Fabulous Feather Boa?
I play the Potoroo as well as Koala Mother and Wombat Mum!
How did you get started in the performing arts?
So I got started through my dad. When I was about six I think, I was in my dad’s graduating play when he was studying. It wasn’t until I was around twelve that I actually started trying to pursue it. Basically, I was shown the world of performing arts by my dad and promptly decided that it was what I wanted to do with the rest of my life.
What has been your favourite job so far and why?
Oh my, my favourite job so far would be when I was in a piece called Hecate. It was with Yirra Yaakin and was for Perth Festival 2020. It was a translation and adaptation of Macbeth by Kylie Bracknell and not only was it my first professional show but through it, I got to learn my own language and even better, perform in it. I was in it with my dad which was really, really special and that’s not even mentioning how I had looked up to some of the cast for years.. So, being able to share a stage with them all was something I only dreamed of. It was an absolutely magical experience and one that I’ll always treasure.
Do you have a lucky charm like the feather boa, what is it?
I don’t really have a lucky charm but I tend to have lucky songs. So they’re just songs I listen to when I’m about to do something important or just to give me the guts and the courage that the boa gave the potoroo. The songs change up a lot but at the moment it’s Alone by Heart.
Did you have a favourite picture book or story as a child and can you tell us why you liked it?
So I asked mum this and turns out we had so many books I never picked a favourite but if we just want to talk about books with pictures then anything in the ‘ology’ series, primarily dragonology and wizardology were my favourites. I’ve always loved fantasy and I think it might have begun with those books.
Has there been someone like Miss Lily in your life and who were they?
Miss Lily reminds me a bit of both of my grandmothers, my yayaa who is my mum’s mum and my nan, who was my dad’s mum. Both have given me so much and had the remarkable ability to make complicated and upsetting situations seem surprisingly simple.
